Spirituals

The Voice of the Oppressed

Sun 4.12.2022 . Start 16:00 Uhr . Entry 15:45 Uhr .
STUDIO Olgastrasse . Olgastraße 93b . 70180 Stuttgart .
Entrance fee 25,00 Euro . Reduced 10,00 Euro .

The program presents songs and poems of the oppressed in spirituals and lyrics by black Americans Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784) and Langston Hughes (1902-1967), and by contemporary Belarusian Dmitri Strotsev (b. 1963).
Spirituals emerged from the combination of African rhythms and melodies, and the church songs that slaves heard from their white masters. Especially in the Old Testament texts that speak of the hardship and liberation of the people of Israel, they found scenes that corresponded to their own situation. Trapped in dependency and oppression, they sang of a better world in heaven or a new more just society on earth. With the deep feeling and melancholy, the spirituals in their simple and direct way find the access to the souls of the people.
